An Ancient Approach to Modern Health

The Ayurvedic diet is an ancient eating plan that originated in India thousands of years ago. It is based on the principles of Ayurveda, a traditional Indian system of medicine that emphasises the mind-body connection. The Ayurvedic diet is designed to promote balance and well-being by aligning your food choices with your unique constitution, or dosha. Read on to discover more about an ancient approach to modern health.

What is Dosha?

According to Ayurveda, there are three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha is associated with different physical, mental, and emotional characteristics.

  • Vata dosha is associated with air and space. People with a Vata dosha tend to be thin, dry, and have irregular energy levels.
  • Pitta dosha is associated with fire and water. People with a Pitta dosha tend to be hot-tempered, have oily skin, and a strong appetite.
  • Kapha dosha is associated with earth and water. People with a Kapha dosha tend to be heavy, stable, and have slow digestion.

The Ayurvedic Diet for Each Dosha

The Ayurvedic diet recommends eating foods that are appropriate for your dosha. For example, people with a Vata dosha should eat warm, grounding foods such as soups, stews, and cooked vegetables. People with a Pitta dosha should eat cooling foods such as fruits, salads, and yogurt. People with a Kapha dosha should eat light, dry foods such as beans, grains, and vegetables.
